BP Battery Optimizer is an application designed to assist BP Oil Field Technicians with the installation, monitoring and tracking of large batteries used for powering oil rigs through hand-held communication with RFID technology.
MY ROLE:
Lead UX/UI Designer. Visual Design. 3D Printing. Patent Writing & Schematics.
THE PROBLEM:
BP Oil realized a significant cost associated with batteries used to power oil pumps in remote locations. These costs were due to a number of factors, including replacement prior to fully diminished power charge, misplaced units, theft, and lack of ability to track locations and install dates.
THE SOLUTION:
A product that could track and monitor a battery’s lifecycle, install date, status and location using RFID Tag technology and GPS. A product that could endure extreme fluctuations in climate, temperatures and could be easily navigated and used by technicians who wear gloves and safety gear.
DISCOVERY PHASE:
As lead UX Architect and Interaction Designer on our team, I organized and scheduled interviews with Business Partners, Technical Project Managers, RFID Scientists and Users in order to clearly understand current workflows, battery lifecycles, and installation processes and procedures.
We established a number of opportunities for BP Oil with the goal of developing a system that could provide the following:
• Optimization of Battery Lifespan
• Improved Inventory Management
• Battery Tracking
• Improved Route Planning
• Minimization of Man-Hours
• Reduction of Vehicle Wear-and-Tear
• Automation of Manual Processes
• Minimization of Oil Rig Down-Time
• Deterrent for Battery Theft
Once we identified and mapped out BP’s current workflow, we proceeded to craft a proposed workflow and the corresponding wireframes. Since this was a new product designed from ground-up, our intention was to incorporate all the tasks managed by field technicians, warehouse personnel and administrative staff into one easy to use digital product. By doing this we could effectively address all the points above and ultimately increase productivity while significantly reducing costs.
